History and Heritage

History is all around you in Albury Wodonga. It's easy to explore the fascinating Indigenous, pioneering and immigration stories which helped shape this unique part of our country.

For the Wiradjuri people, the original inhabitants of the area, this location was an important river crossing and tribal meeting place. Follow the Wagirra Trail, featuring the Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk, to discover Aboriginal history and the cultural significance of the Murray River.

At Wonga Wetlands, you'll find a working campsite set out according to tradition. It has areas for cooking, sleeping, tool making and rock art, as well as a ceremony/dancing circle.

Albury Wodonga also holds great significance for many of the 330,000 European immigrants who arrived in Australia after World World II. Visit the fascinating Bonegilla Migrant Experience to learn about these migrants’ journey, their personal stories and their amazing contribution to this country. Albury Library Museum also explores these and many other local stories from the past.

An impressive collection at the Army Museum Bandiana awaits those with an interest in war memorabilia. There are also prisoner of war and ordnance displays as well as guns captured during World War One. Don't forget to visit Monument Hill and the Captain Albert Borella Memorial during your visit too.

Or just stay in town and take the self-guided Albury Heritage Trail with a walk around the city's beautiful 18th and 19th century buildings. There is even a handy downloadable app to fill you in on all the details.
