Imagine if your house had survived a fire, held a fortune in gold, hosted music lessons, and even had a fake herbalist living in it...
Welcome to Kia Ora.
Built in 1858 as Albury`s first purpose-built Bank of New South Wales, this beautiful granite building has seen more drama than most Netflix series.
Before the building even opened, bank manager John Walker Jones had to transport the bank`s cash from Melbourne. On the journey, his carriage overturned in Wodonga Creek and the cash box sank to the bottom. With no way to retrieve it before dark, he camped beside the creek overnight to guard it until it could be recovered the next day. Thankfully, every pound survived!
Just over 20 years later, disaster struck again when a fire tore through the Imperial Hotel next door, spreading to the bank. The building was gutted, but its thick granite walls and strongroom stood firm, protecting the gold, cash and important documents inside.
After the bank moved to Dean Street, Kia Ora took on many new lives. It became a family home, a stock and station agency, and even an Albury School of Music.
Then came one of its most unusual chapters. In 1920, Kia Ora became home to herbalist Frederick Delbridge. Unfortunately for him, things went downhill after an inquest into a patient`s death revealed he had no medical qualifications. The coroner branded him "an imposter" who preyed on people`s trust and charged exorbitant fees, he left Albury not long after.
The building later became part of the NSW Health Service before eventually returning to life as a private residence.
More than 165 years later, Kia Ora remains one of Albury`s oldest and most remarkable buildings, proving that some stories really are built to last.

Today, the former Dalgety Farmers & Graziers Woolstore is home to accommodation, offices, local businesses and restaurants. But over a century ago, this grand building had a very different tenant... wool. Lots and lots of wool.
As Australia`s largest inland woolstore, it stretched an incredible 104 metres along Smollett Street and had enough space to warehouse a staggering 12,000 bales.
For many years, it also hosted Albury`s annual Trade Fair, where generations of local families came to discover the latest products, machinery and innovations from across the region.
