Sometimes the best way to discover a place is to drive in circles. Big, beautiful circles.

The Lake Hume Driving Loop offers an eclectic mix of sites, stories and seriously good coffee. And the best bit? You don’t even need to leave the Albury Wodonga region. Need a car for your journey? Budget Car, Bus & Truck Rentals can sort you out.

Start with a View at Eastern Hill

Start your loop with a breath of fresh air and sweeping views of the Murray River Flood Plains and beyond. The trail behind the radio towers is part of the famous Hume and Hovell Track, where you – if the weather is clear – can look out over Table Top Mountain and Hume Dam without having to do the 426km hike from Yass.

Stop for Wow at Hume Dam Wall

Guess what? More sweeping views. The Hume Dam Wall is an engineering marvel – all symmetry, strength and history. Pull over, take a walk across the wall, or roll out a picnic blanket beside the lake. If the weather is kind and you packed swimmers or fishing rods, this is a great time to use them.

Hear Our Stories at Bonegilla Migrant Experience

A moving and memorable stop, the Bonegilla Migrant Experience is a walk through a pivotal chapter in Australia’s post-war history. Over 300,000 new arrivals passed through this former immigration camp, bringing with them languages, hope and new beginnings. Open every day, 10am–4pm.

See for Miles at the Huon Hill Lookout

Huon Hill is ideal for sightseeing, bushwalking, picnicking, photography or just standing still wondering why you don’t do this more often. At 263 metres above the floodplains, Huon Hill dishes up a full-circle view of the region. The Murray River snakes below, Lake Hume sparkles on the horizon, and the High Country rolls out like a well-made bed.

Pop into Hyphen, Wodonga

It’s a library and an art gallery under one seriously impressive roof. Hyphen – Wodonga Library Gallery is where written stories meet visual ones in a calming, thoughtfully designed space. Browse the shelves, catch the latest exhibition or let the kids burn off steam in the interactive play space. You’ll think it’s for them – until you find yourself elbow-deep in your own masterpiece.

Stop for a Bite at Junction Place

You’re almost at the finishing line, so it’s time to stop and refuel – and we don’t mean the unleaded kind. Junction Place in Wodonga is home to foodie favourites like BeanStation Café, The Goods Shed and Piccolo Pod. Plenty of delicious options to get rid of any hangry vibes in the car.

Finish with a Creative Hit at Gateway Village

Loop completed. You’ve seen the lake, the hills and the history – now for your final stop at Gateway Village for a taste of the region’s creative soul. Pottery, painting and woodturning galleries line the precinct, and, if it’s a Saturday morning, the Farmers Market is a must. The Hothouse is host to live theatre, and La Maison Restaurant serves up a great coffee that you can take down to the river walk behind the village to sit and contemplate your beautiful day trip.

Ready to Loop the Loop?

The Lake Hume Driving Loop is a foolproof plan to see the region in one fell swoop, tire out the kids, or spend a dreamy Saturday drive enjoying nature, culture, coffee stops and photo ops, all in one glorious circle.
