Some of the best adventures in town come with a $0 price tag – so if you’re on a budget, we’ve got you covered.

Albury Wodonga is packed with free places to wander, play, splash and explore. From riverside trails and fairy gardens to free galleries and tranquil picnic spots, you’ll find plenty of ways to fill your days without spending a cent.

Here are our top 10 free adventures to prove that the best things in life really are free:

1. Explore the Yindyamarra Sculpture Trail

The Yindyamarra Sculpture Trail is a 5.3km stretch of the Wagirra Trail, featuring 15 large-scale sculptures created by Aboriginal artists, each sharing deep stories of connection to Country. Feel the pulse of ancient history as you stroll under red gums and take in striking works crafted from stone, steel and wood. This adventure is humbling, soulful and – yep! – totally free. 2. Walk the Crossing Place Trail

On the Wodonga side, this 5.1km loop is a local favourite – and not just because it’s flat and easy on the knees. The Crossing Place Trail tells the story of Yarre the Mailman and includes sculptures by Aboriginal artists Michael Bogie, Patricia Cerminara, Treahna Hamm and Tamara Murray. Look out for scar trees: oval-shaped markings on old trunks left by traditional bark harvesting. If you’re lucky (and quiet), you might spot some local wildlife – which you can narrate to in your best David Attenborough accent to really elevate the experience.

3. Cycle (or Cruise) the High Country Rail Trail

The High Country Rail Trail takes you 30km along a winding trail, past golden farmland, sleepy towns and scenic views of Lake Hume. But don’t be intimidated if endurance is not your superpower; there’s something here for every backside. If you’re not up for the entire trail, just do a short, leisurely stint. You’ll traverse beautiful terrain that’ll have you stopping for photos every five minutes – and craving bakery goods by the end.

4. Take in the View from Huon Hill

Whether you sweat your way to the top or take the easy route and drive, Huon Hill Parklands serves up a good dose of exercise – with a view. You’ll be treated to the full panorama of Albury, Wodonga, and the Murray, and even a glimpse of the mountains when the skies are clear. It might just earn you a group photo where everyone’s eyes are open at once, in awe of the view.

5. Get Curious at Hyphen

Hyphen – Wodonga Library Gallery is a place that can easily occupy a whole day. It’s calm, creative and completely free. Downstairs, you’ll find a full library service with cosy reading nooks for curling up, cat-like, and losing yourself in a book. Upstairs, the gallery spaces showcase everything from thought-provoking exhibitions to the downright whimsical. Got kids in tow? Head up the winding staircase (or take the lift) and let them loose in the interactive Playspace. Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself elbow-deep in craft supplies too – and unwilling to leave when your kids are ready to move on.

6. Find Magic in the Albury Botanic Gardens

The Albury Botanic Gardens are hard to beat for an outing that pleases the whole gang. With leafy paths, towering trees and wide lawns made for loafing, this is where you go when you need a full sensory exhale. For those with littlies, seek out the fully enclosed Children’s Garden, where dinosaurs greet you at the gate and fairy temples hide in the foliage. It’s a choose-your-own adventure storybook, and if your kids start asking to go back the next day, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

7. Go for a Dip

There’s nothing quite like a cooling river swim to make you appreciate the best things in life. Head to Norieul Park, bring your pool noodle and sense of adventure, and let the current sweep you downstream. For a lakeside swim with mountain views, Lake Hume offers a gentle slope into the water, shaded picnic tables, BBQ facilities and public toilets – meaning you can make a whole day of it if the weather is good and the esky’s well-stocked.

8. Go Birdwatching at Wonga Wetlands

Home to over 176 identified bird species, Wonga Wetlands is a place where nature shows off a bit, quite frankly. The trail will take you through billabongs and towering gums while you keep your eyes and ears peeled for egrets, spoonbills, cormorants, darters, swamphens and coots. If you’re feeling extra twitchy, don’t forget your binoculars, bird ID book, and your thermos of something hot. Three purpose-built bird hides give you a quiet vantage point to watch the action without ruffling any feathers – just settle in, stay still and let the wetlands reveal their secrets. 9. Get Cultured at MAMA

The Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) is a visual treat – and yes, entry is free. Expect bold contemporary works, big-name exhibitions and creative surprises that’ll have you seeing the world a little differently. It’s the perfect spot to dodge the weather and feel a little bit cultured while you’re at it. Got kids? They’ll be just as entertained, with interactive spaces and rotating exhibitions that keep their curiosity stoked and their hands off the walls.

10. Let the Kids Loose at Belvoir Park

Kids getting restless? Belvoir Park Playground in Wodonga will keep them busy. It’s huge, dynamic and built to impress even the toughest of tiny critics. We’re talking a flying fox, towering climbing structures, and a ninja warrior course to test their stunt double potential. For adults, bigger kids and furry pals, there’s a walking track around the lake, a community woodfired oven, picnic and barbecue facilities, an off-leash dog park and room to throw a ball.
