You might head to Mate’s Corner today for a new TV or some sewing supplies, but rewind 80 years and the shopping list looked vastly different.
The stores may have changed, but the MATE’S name hasn’t gone anywhere. Nearly 50 years after the department store closed, it still proudly overlooks this familiar Dean Street corner.
The story begins in 1850, when T. H. Mate established the business that would become a familiar name to generations of Albury shoppers.
Mate’s didn’t always occupy this corner though. The site was originally home to Albury’s first National School before Mate and Co.’s Department Store moved here in 1900.
Then, disaster struck.
In 1915, a devastating fire destroyed the Dean Street store. But Mate’s wasn’t gone for long. By August 1916, an impressive new building had risen in its place, with a later extension along Kiewa Street helping shape the Mate’s Building we recognise today.
For generations of locals, Mate’s was the place to shop.
And during Albury’s blazing summers of the 1940s and 50s, you could pick up all the essentials: lightweight pyjamas, electric fans, square hand water bags and even pure wool swim trunks. 🥵
Mate’s continued trading from the corner until 1976, ending more than a century of business under the family name. But the shopping didn`t stop. The building later became home to major retailers including Waltons and Venture before undergoing a major redevelopment in the late 1980s.
More than 175 years after T. H. Mate first went into business, this corner is still doing what it has done for generations: giving Albury somewhere to shop.

If you’ve ever used the Albury Post Office clock to check whether you’re running late, you’re relying on some very old technology.
The clock above Dean Street has been keeping Albury on time since 1879.
But the building`s story starts even earlier. The site’s origins date back to 1861, when it served as a Telegraph Office.
By 1877, Albury was ready for something a little grander. Architect James Barnet designed a revamped Post Office in the Victorian Free Classical style, complete with six rooms upstairs, private accommodation for the postmaster, stables and even a buggy house.
Then came the clock tower. Its turret clock was made by renowned 19th-century clockmaker Angelo Tornaghi, whose work can also be spotted in regional centres including Forbes, Orange, Dubbo, Lismore and Tamworth.
In November 1879, Albury’s clock struck for the very first time.
Imagine Dean Street then. No phones in pockets. No smartwatches on wrists. Just a rather impressive clock tower making sure everyone knew the time.
More than 130 years later, the building received another important milestone when the Albury Post Office was placed on the Commonwealth Heritage List in 2011.
And all these years later, it’s still one of Dean Street’s most recognisable landmarks. Next time you walk past, look up. You’re looking at a clock that’s been part of Albury life for nearly 150 years.
