Right in the heart of Albury, @2640_restaurant_and_bar is the kind of place that can very easily become a recurring character during your weekend away.

If the walls of the Globe Hotel could talk, they’d have some serious name-dropping to do 👀
The Globe opened on the corner of Dean and Kiewa Streets in 1860, with 18 rooms, stables and one very well-positioned address.
The man behind it was John Roper, an explorer who had travelled with Ludwig Leichhardt and had a river in the Northern Territory named after him. When Albury’s main travelling route shifted along Kiewa and Dean Streets, Roper saw an opportunity and thought: you know what this corner needs? A hotel.
And he was onto something.
Over the next century, the Globe became one of Albury’s best-known social hubs. Its balcony hosted political speeches, while inside there were banquets, weddings and plenty of famous faces.
Prime Ministers John Curtin and Joseph Lyons visited. General Douglas MacArthur stopped in for lunch during World War II. Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester dined there. Even tennis stars and touring French rugby players made an appearance.
Then there were the stranger moments...
When Albury was packed for the railway celebrations in 1883, the Globe ran out of beds and reportedly put bedding on the billiard room floor... and even on the billiard table.
And in 1890, an American balloonist had a rather eventful day when his hot-air balloon flight went wrong. He parachuted to safety, landing on the roof of the Globe Hotel which, in a convenient twist, just happened to be where he was staying.
By the 1930s, the Globe had grown to 75 rooms, but major alterations in the 1960s removed much of the original hotel, including its famous balcony and verandah.
More than 100 years after John Roper first saw potential in the corner, the Globe as generations knew it was largely gone.
But its stories? They’re still very much here.

It’s about that time of year again, when we get to celebrate the father figures in our lives. This Father’s Day, we think Dad deserves a little more than another pair of socks 🧦
Make a day of it instead.
