Slow down this Autumn
There’s something special about autumn in Albury Wodonga. The mornings are crips, the leaves turn shades of gold and amber and the region settles into the perfect place for a weekend escape.
Whether you’re chasing outdoor adventure, incredible local food or simply a chance to slow down the border region offers the perfect mix of activity and relaxation.
Explore the Region by Bike
One of the best ways to experience the changing autumn landscape is on two wheels, and this season AV Cycling Tours has made it easier than ever with their new 2 Day Rail, Trails & Rivers Cycling Tour.
Thanks to free V/Line travel from Melbourne until the end of May, visitors can leave the car behind and step straight into a fully supported cycling getaway through some of the region’s most scenic destinations. Designed for everyone from experienced riders to complete beginners, the tour combines rail trail cycling, local food stops and relaxed regional travel into one seamless experience.
From the moment guests arrive in Wodonga, the AV Cycling team takes care of everything. E-bikes are provided, luggage is carried for you and transfers between trails are all organised, allowing riders to focus entirely on the experience itself.
And the riding is spectacular.
Day one winds through the breathtaking High Country Rail Trail toward Lake Hume beneath rows of autumn colour. There’s a stillness to the landscape at this time of year. Cool air. Quiet roads. Sunlight cutting through the trees. Along the way, riders stop in small regional towns for bakery lunches and warm coffees before continuing toward the iconic Sandy Creek Bridge and the Hume Dam wall.
Day two shifts pace slightly, combining sections of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail with riverside riding through Beechworth and Yackandandah, the Yindyamarra Sculpture Trail and Wonga Wetlands. Scenic. Relaxed. And accessible whether you ride every weekend or haven’t been on a bike in years.
Wander Through Nature
For visitors wanting to continue exploring on foot, Nature Trax offers another way to connect with the region. Their guided walks and outdoor experiences take travellers through some of the Ovens Murray region’s most stunning landscapes, including Beechworth, Bright, Mount Buffalo, Falls Creek and Corryong.
Led by experienced outdoor guides, the experiences range from easy half-day walks to full-day adventures through alpine landscapes, waterfalls and national parks.
One day you might be wandering through fern gullies near Mount Beauty, the next exploring panoramic lookouts and historic trails at Mount Buffalo. Autumn is the perfect time for it too. Cooler temperatures, golden scenery and trails that seem to glow in the late afternoon light.
Fuel Up with Local Produce
Of course, no getaway is complete without good food — and after a full day exploring, Almar Organics is the perfect place to stock up and recharge.
More than just a grocery store, Almar focuses on fresh, thoughtfully sourced produce and products that are organic where possible, local whenever they can be, and always chosen with care.
It’s the kind of place where you can grab healthy snacks for the road, ingredients for a cosy autumn dinner or simply wander the shelves discovering local favourites.
Time to Unwind
And when it’s time to properly slow down, The Ritual Skin Studio offers a calming way to finish your autumn escape. Located in the heart of Albury, the wellness studio focuses on helping visitors step away from the noise of everyday life and fully switch off while away.
The experience feels relaxed and welcoming rather than intimidating, making it perfect even for first-time spa or wellness visitors. From personalised facials and massage treatments to calming breathwork sessions, everything is designed to help guests leave feeling refreshed, rested and restored after days spent exploring the region.
Because sometimes the best part of travelling isn’t rushing from one place to another. It’s giving yourself permission to pause. That’s what autumn in Albury Wodonga does so well. It invites you to take your time. To ride a little slower. Stay a little longer. And experience the region in a way that feels grounded, seasonal and genuinely restorative
