A one-day itinerary to taste, stroll, sip and stay – with plenty of regional style.

Maybe you’re on a road trip and you’re just passing through, or perhaps you’re on a quick overnight getaway and want to make the most of it. Either way, you’re in luck: Albury Wodonga delivers a brim-full plate of nature, culture, food and fun to be had in 24 hours.

Here’s how to make the most of your stay:

9:00am – Coffee and a Walk

Start at The River Deck Café at Noreuil Park. Settle in under the gums with a latte and a view of the Murray. Order the Apple Crumble Waffle, a Ruben Benni or maybe the Full Deck breakfast if you’re after a big feed for a full day.

You’re already at the Albury Riverside Precinct, so you may as well take a stroll along the banks. If you’re up for a longer amble, jump in the car and beeline to Kremur St to reach the 5.3km Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk: a cultural trail of Indigenous sculptures, set along the river bends.

10:30am – Get Arty

Explore the region’s growing collection of murals and sculptures on Albury Wodonga’s Public Art Trail. You can make a whole day of this if you want, with 142 artworks to seek out. Drop by Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA) or Hyphen – Wodonga Library Gallery for beautifully curated art exhibitions. Take your time wandering the quiet, inspiring space, then pop into the gallery shop for a beautifully curated selection of books, prints and handmade pieces. If you’re still in the mood for more, head to Gateway Village, Wodonga across the border for an intimate regional gallery experience.

12:00am – Hit the Shops

After all that visual inspiration, treat yourself to a little potter around the shops. Head to Zeinert and Co for locally made gifts, Season to Taste for kitchen luxuries or Di Billiet Homewares for anything from the simple to the delightfully unusual. If department store staples are calling, Myer Centrepoint is the place to go. Run out of toothpaste? Priceline Pharmacy Albury is nearby for all the practical bits.

1:30pm – Indulge in a Long Lunch

For a bite in Albury, try Yuu Sushi, where fresh Japanese favourites glide past on a classic sushi train. It’s perfect for kids or for sampling a bit of everything. Or head to Junction Place, Wodonga’s food precinct set around a converted railway station. Find a cosy booth at The Goods Shed for generous share plates and a rotating menu that champions local produce. For a pub-style lunch with a twist, head to Church St Hotel, just around the corner.

3:00pm – Take It Easy

Now that you’re all lunched up, choose your own adventure with a walk, a bike ride or a deep dive into the region’s history. Take a scenic ride along the Murray or reach out to AV Cycling Tours for a guided experience. Walk the lush banks of the Murray – you can’t go wrong in either direction. Or check out the Albury War Memorial for a moving insight into Australian history.

4:00pm – Golden Hour Tipple

When it’s time for a drink and cosy place to sit, grab a crisp local brew at The Thirsty Devil Brewery or head to Temperance and General Albury for cocktails down a trendy laneway. (Don’t forget to pop into Booktique while you’re there and stock up on some new reading material.) For a relaxed atmosphere and a wine list worth lingering over, Public House Albury and Beer Deluxe Albury are both solid bets. For something upscale and intimate, Dux is the place to go for curated wines, cocktails and pre-dinner share plates.

6:30pm – Dinner with Flair

As evening rolls in, you’ll be faced with a tough decision: where to eat. There are so many options on both sides of the border. Din Dins Asian Fusion Restaurant is a go-to for refined Asian cuisine. For a cosy, intimate vibe and flavour-packed share plates, stay on at Dux Albury. They have a chef’s tasting menu, if you want to try it all. If you’re craving Mediterranean flavours, head to Aida Albury, or for a good ol’ parmi or pub classic, The Lincoln, Birallee Tavern or Brady’s Railway Hotel will hit that sweet spot in a warm, cosy space.

8:30pm – After Dark

As night falls, Albury Wodonga comes alive in its own laid-back, country town kind of way. Check local listings for live music at The Goods Shed Wodonga or catch a touring act at the Albury Entertainment Centre. SS&A Club Albury often hosts live music, and The Bended Elbow is your go-to for tunes with pub vibes. Prefer something quieter? Sink into a velvet seat at Regent Cinemas Albury and catch the latest release or wind down with a glass of something smooth at a hotel bar. 2640 Restaurant and Bar, Mercure Albury and Quest Albury are all great choices.

10:30pm – Time for Bed

After a full day of exploring, it’s time to slip into something more comfortable: your pyjamas. If you’re camping in comfort at BIG4 Borderland Wodonga or Wodonga Caravan & Cabin Park, you’ll find everything you need for a simple, peaceful night’s rest. If plush is your preference, Atura Albury delivers king-sized comfort with retro flair, while Best Western Hovell Tree Inn is perfect for those who like a soak in the spa before bed. Quest Albury on Townsend, Quest Wodonga and Mantra Albury Hotel provide sleek, apartment-style stays with all the conveniences of home.

8:00am (Next Morning) – Breakfast Before You Go

Before you hit the road, swing by The Real Florist for exceptional coffee, served among flowering blooms and best enjoyed on Swift Street with a little morning people-watching. For breakfast options, and crowd-pleasing classics in an industrial-chic heritage railway building, BeanStation is a great choice, and Mr Benedict is your go-to eggs benny and all the comforting morning staples.

You’ll be back on the road well fed, well caffeinated and just a little bit smug about how good your Albury Wodonga getaway has been. From riverside strolls to rich art and late-night bites, this place can be disarmingly delightful – if we do say so ourselves.
