Just out of town

Albury Wodonga is the heart of mini-touring adventures in the nearby high country and wine country. Hit the road with these three itineraries.

Itinerary #1: History on high

Time-travel back to the heritage-rich town of Beechworth. This town is sure to captivate, only a 45-minute drive from Albury Wodonga. Shop for locally produced honey and bee-auty products at Beechworth Honey or take a sweet cooking class. Visit the notorious Beechworth Gaol – the one-time ‘home’ of legendary outlaw Ned Kelly.

From Beechworth, head to Yackandandah for your art and culture fix. ‘Yack’ is known for its artisanal creations, including pottery and fine art. It’s also home to the renowned Sluga Gallery, featuring owner and artist Charles Sluga. Enjoy award-winning pies from Gum Tree Pies or sample small batch handcrafted whisky and gin at Backwoods Distilling Co. Make sure there’s space in the boot of the car for some antique shopping in the perfectly preserved gold-rush era town of Chiltern.

Itinerary #2: Wine country

Keen to sample some of the best wines Australia has to offer? Just over 30 minutes west of Albury Wodonga is Rutherglen and Corowa. This region is famous for their distinctive reds and fortified wines, whilst equally delicious whites and rosés are also available. Start your day at Corowa Whisky and Chocolate, where you can make your own chocolate and relax over a casual meal in the unique setting of disused wheat silos. Make your way to the award-winning Thousand Pound Wine Bar and Store, they pour the region’s finest alongside tasty chef-driven fare.

Itinerary #3: Not so hidden gems

Step into the shoes of our pioneers and explore life as an early settler at The Jindera Pioneer Museum, only 20 minutes from Albury Wodonga. Or feel like getting back to nature? Maybe about a stroll through The Jindera Wetland area, located in the heart of town. A haven for native birds and animals as well as a relaxing walk.

Jindera Pioneer Museum, Jindera

From Jindera you can make your way northeast for roughly 40 minutes to the quaint town of Holbrook where you’ll find the Holbrook Submarine Museum. Find out why there’s a full-sized submarine 400 kilometres from the beach! Another 40 minutes south will take you to the Wymah Ferry, which has been operating for free since 1946. It’s one of only two remaining ferries that cross the Murray River, completing the crossing in six minutes.
