Rutherglen’s largest sign, bragging ‘Sydney may have a nice harbour but Rutherglen has a great port’, brings out many amused smiles. There’s no disputing it: Rutherglen is Victoria’s premier wine region. Its wine region culture has a deep soul, a sense of history and purpose, and a dose of good old-fashioned bush humour and hospitality. The area has a fantastic range of fine-dining options, stunning historic buildings and interesting stories about family-owned vineyards.

Combine the gastronomical with the physical. Grab a mountain bike and tour the region’s cellar doors and attractions at your own pace, or saddle up the road bike for some very challenging rides. New touring bikes are available for hire at the Rutherglen Wine Experience. You can simply download all the cycle routes and get specific directions and a map. There’s a ride to satisfy both the Sunday cruiser and the die-hard road warrior.

Chiltern

Wander through Chiltern’s well-preserved 19th century streetscape and imagine you’re on the set of an Australian period film. Over 20 buildings in the village are registered or owned by the National Trust. Take a self-guided walk through the streets, past the historic post office, courthouse, masonic hall and original police cells. Visit Lakeview House, the elegant former home of distinguished author Henry Handel Richardson, who penned the Australian classic The Getting of Wisdom.
