Bogong Alpine Way

See scenery like nothing else on the 230km Bogong Alpine Way, which loops through Bright, Mount Beauty and Falls Creek and over Dinner Plain and Mount Hotham. This is part of the Great Alpine Road – a 308km route that extends from Wangaratta in the north-east to Bairnsdale in the heart of Gippsland. This is Australia’s highest year-round accessible sealed road, and it winds past lofty mountains, valleys, forests, rivers, vineyards and farms. Sample local food and wine, and fish, cycle, climb or ride along the way.

Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail

Following historical railway lines, the Murray to the Mountains Rail Trail provides 94 km of bitumen-sealed track well suited to both cycling and walking. The trail has a gentle gradient that makes it suitable for all ages and levels of fitness, and is a must-do for all visitors to the region. This trail is an ideal introduction to the diverse countryside of the north-east Victorian Alps and valleys. It will lead you deep into pine forests and natural bushland then out into valleys nestled amongst some of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Australia.

Yarrawonga

The drive to Yarrawonga–Mulwala winds through rich farmland alongside the Murray River. The twin towns are separated by the mighty Murray and the beautiful man-made Lake Mulwala. Pretty sandy beaches along the river offer quiet swimming spots on a warm day, and you can hire a canoe to explore the backwaters and lagoons. Alternatively, take a scenic cruise, go parasailing or have some waterskiing lessons on Lake Mulwala.

The town was named Holbrook in 1914 in honour of Lieutenant N.D. Holbrook of the Royal Navy, the first submariner to receive the Victoria Cross in World War I, who skippered the original HMS B11 during that war.
